In a word, “No”. One of the great advantages of digital photography is the technology that allows fine tuning of images. We can adjust exposure, focus, and color balance of all of the image or just part of it. Distracting background bits can be toned down, and we can highlight the main subject. This adjustment process combines the eye of the artist with the hand of the computer technician. Many, or all, of these adjustments could be done with traditional film photography, but at prohibitive costs.
Changes can sometimes be subtle, and yet produce dramatic results. It’s not magic.
We can’t fix a bad image, but we can take an image that is good and make it great or a
great one and make it spectacular.
For an example of what’s possible, take a look at this image of a little terrier charging through the weave poles. A fun image of abright-eyed and intense dog strutting his stuff. Right out of the camera, this is a great picture, sharp and clear, and with a great feeling of movement.
Unfortunately, the background is a bit distracting, and the lighting is flat. When you look at this picture you certainly see the dog, but your eyes wander around the frame, taking in the background. There is more we can do for this spunky character to really make him stand out.
Now look at this little guy shine! We have cropped in so the dog is the center of attention, darkened the brightest parts of the background, while brightening and sharpening his face. Notice how your focus snaps right to his eyes. Now the little guy’s personality just jumps off the page!
This level of attention to detail is what you can expect from every print you order from Flying Jibe Photography.
